A young mother from Scotland, who was sacked from her job after advising her employers that she was pregnant, has claimed that the situation has left her in financial difficulties – despite an employment tribunal ruling in the employee's favour.
Can you claim unfair dismissal if you are sacked for being pregnant?
It has been reported that the young mother informed her former employers of her pregnancy at the earliest opportunity, and although she has claimed they seemed ok to begin with, she was sacked a few weeks later.
During an employment tribunal, the employee was awarded compensation to the value of £16,000, however, she has yet to receive any of the damages.
Under current employment laws, pregnant employees have a number of additional legal rights after informing their employers that they are pregnant, including protection against discrimination, unfair treatment and dismissal.
However, in the unfortunate situation where you feel that you have been treated unfairly, discriminated against or dismissed as a result of your pregnancy, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation against your employers – and our team of solicitors will be able to assist.
